XGL? Have you tried the future?

I have a separate drive solely running Microsoft’s next generation Operating System, Vista. While the experience of using it is quite exciting, we still have to wait for its final build and then the release.

From the x users camp, all you’d hear them say is “Why wait for the future? Future is NOW!”

I think they are right.

Why? Because, the upcoming Vista’s aero mode can be experienced right now and in a much more enjoyable note.

To have an idea of what i’m saying, please visit this link or search XGL.

To keep you going, Xgl is an X server architecture, started by David Reveman, layered on top of OpenGL via glitz. It takes advantage of modern graphics cards via their OpenGL drivers, supporting hardware acceleration of all X, OpenGL and XVideo applications and graphical effects by a compositing window manager such as Compiz.

Aero is cool, no doubt about it, but when you have a graphics card or a system per se that DOES NOT meet the Aero resource demands, it sure will so crawl. If it can run Vista, that is.

In my other drive that runs Ubuntu 6.06, XGL was fairly easy to set-up. It’s a really exciting feeling having these graphics in front of your eyes. And to note that this is runnning on my mediocre system that just have the cheapo FX5200 128Mb/64 bit graphics card, which crawls in Vista, is simply – amazing!

If you want to experience the future, you may want to install XGL on your favorite flavor of x system or have it on default in Suse 10.1. So there, have fun!
